Cough, Sputter, Sneeze!

The cold and flu season is here. Let’s review what you can do to reduce your risk of getting sick, as well as spreading an illness to others.

Both the flu and the common cold are respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses. They can have similar symptoms which makes it difficult to tell them apart. Cold symptoms are usually milder than the symptoms of the flu. Adults 65 and older are also at greater risk for having serious complications from the flu. To decrease your chances of getting sick this season, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend the following:

1. Get a yearly flu vaccine.
2. Wash your hands – frequently.
3. Avoid close contact with sick people.
4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread this way.
5. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
6. Do the ‘elbow cough’.
7. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs (door handles, phones, and keyboards are examples).
8. Drink plenty of water.

If you have a cold, you should follow these tips to help prevent spreading it to other people:
1. Stay at home while you are sick.
2. Avoid close contact with others, such as hugging, kissing, or shaking hands.
3. Move away from people before coughing or sneezing.
4. Wash your hands after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
