Top Tips for Healthy Aging
September is Healthy Aging Month! No, we can’t slow down time, but we all can take many proactive steps to stay healthy as we age. Here are just a few of the ways you can maximize your health:
Be Active in Life – Regular exercise is key to staying fit and maintaining independence. Find an activity you like and stick with it! Aerobic, muscle strengthening, and balance exercises should all be included in your routine.
Choose Healthy Foods – Older adults generally don’t need as many calories. That means you need to choose foods that are packed with nutrients to meet your body’s needs. Always follow your doctor’s advice on diet, but some example of wise food choices include: colorful fruits and vegetables, lean sources of protein (fish, poultry, lean cuts, beans, and nuts), non-fat dairy products, and whole-grain foods. And watch the sodium (salt)!
Build Your Brain – Studies show a lifestyle that includes ongoing, active learning helps to reduce cognitive decline. Learn a new language, take classes, read books, go to a dance class!
Get Your Sleep – Aim for seven to nine hours per night. Inadequate sleep is linked to increased fall risk, depression, and memory issues. Stick to a regular sleep schedule. Avoid caffeine late in the day and don’t watch TV or cruise the internet while in bed.
Pursue Prevention – Many common illnesses, as well as accidents and falls are preventable. Be proactive to prevent such issues. Stay current on vaccinations like an annual flu shot. Wash your hands regularly, use assistive devices as instructed, remove trip hazards in your home, and have regular vision exams.
